About

Background and Mission

The Graduate Program in Pathology, inaugurated in 1977, aimed to train qualified professors for Teaching Pathology as well as master’s and Ph.D. researchers. Nevertheless, considering the aspects of Ribeirão Preto Medical School-USP, Department of Pathology, and Forensic Medicine, whose faculty have always comprised professors accredited by the Area, the academic training and research activities emerged simultaneously, resulting in high-level dissertations and theses.

Since 1994, the Program offers two options, Human Pathology and Experimental Pathology. The Human Pathology course is aimed at pathologists, and the Experimental Pathology is intended for other physicians and non-physicians with training in the biological field provided they had attended the General Pathology course at college. Through Experimental Pathology, it was possible to increase and broaden the admissions and the lines of research.

The Program qualifies several professors from private institutions. Young former students from public and private institutions recognize graduate studies as a crucial professional qualification instrument. Students of the Biological area, who do not have the General Pathology discipline in the Undergraduate curriculum, can be admitted as long as they develop an internship in our research laboratories with satisfactory performance, besides undergoing the admission procedures.

About the course

The Graduate Program in Pathology belongs to the Field of Study in Pathology and comprises two options:

HUMAN PATHOLOGY

The Human Pathology provides Master’s and Ph.D. programs for bachelors of Medicine with the Medical Residency in Pathological Anatomy. Re-accredited by the Federal Council of Education in 1993, the program is prominent among Graduate Programs in Pathology in Brazil, with grade 6 in CAPES evaluation (2007 to 2009).

The courses are intended for training research professors to meet the demand in general or specialized areas, which require physicians with specialized training in Human Pathology. In this context, the courses offered are limited to the medical field and require the Medical Residency in Pathological Anatomy, under Resolution No. 11/77 of the CFE. Furthermore, the courses require previous specialized training in Pathology and shall not be confused with the Residency.

The courses are planned in a program covering disciplines in the area and related to the Basic and Medical Area. They provide intense hospital experience, methods, and techniques for researching key issues of Pathology and Medicine.

The Master’s course comprises defending a Dissertation, and it shall be accomplished in at least three years.

A minimum of 30 credits is required in graduate courses. Of these, ten are obtained in disciplines in the field of study and 20 in related area disciplines. Each credit is equivalent to 15 hours of work. The 15 credits in the area are obtained in disciplines selected by student and advisor.

After accomplishing the credits, the graduate student undergoes a Qualifying Exam, in which he shall present a scientific paper derived from the Dissertation. This paper shall be ready for publication.

For obtaining the Master’s degree, in addition to considering regulatory conditions, we require activities in a research project for a period equivalent to a minimum of 66 credits, besides defending a Dissertation relevant to the project.

The Master’s student in Human Pathology who meets the requirements will be a “Master’s in Medical Sciences”, Field of study “Pathology”, Option “Human Pathology”.

The Ph.D. course comprises defending a thesis and shall be accomplished in four years.

A minimum of 20 credits is required in graduate course disciplines. Of these, eight shall be obtained in disciplines in the field of study and 12 in related disciplines. Each credit is equivalent to 15 hours of work.

The ten credits of the Area are obtained in disciplines selected by the student/advisor.

After accomplishing the credits, the graduate student undergoes a Qualifying Exam, in which he shall present a scientific paper derived from the Thesis. This paper shall be ready for publication.

For obtaining the Ph.D. degree, in addition to considering regulatory conditions, we require activities in a research project for a period equivalent to a minimum of 142 credits, besides defending a Thesis relevant to the project.

The Ph.D. student in Human Pathology who meets the requirements will be a “Doctor in Medical Sciences”, Field of study “Pathology”, Option “Human Pathology”.

EXPERIMENTAL PATHOLOGY

The applicant admitted to the “Experimental Pathology” shall have a higher education certificate and shall have studied the General Pathology discipline in the undergraduate curriculum. In exceptional cases, any applicant with a college degree who did not have the General Pathology discipline in his/her undergraduate course may be admitted since he/she has completed an internship in the Laboratory of the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine under the responsibility of an advisor in the Area. This internship must be at least one year longer. In these cases, the CCP will evaluate the student’s acceptance based on a letter from the professor in charge, who must explain the request.

For the Master’s course, at least 30 credits are required in graduate disciplines. Of these, ten are obtained in disciplines in the field of study and 20 in disciplines of related areas. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of work. The disciplines selected shall be chosen by the student/advisor. The course shall be accomplished within three years.

The Master’s student in Experimental Pathology who meets the requirements will be a “Master’s in Medical Sciences”, Field of study “Pathology”, Option “Experimental Pathology”.

For the Ph.D. course, at least 20 credits are required in graduate disciplines. Of these, eight are obtained in disciplines in the field of study and 12 in disciplines of related areas. Each credit corresponds to 15 hours of work. The disciplines selected shall be chosen by the student/advisor. The course shall be accomplished within four years.

The Master’s degree is a prerequisite for enrollment in the Doctorate.

The Ph.D. student in Experimental Pathology who meets the requirements will be a “Ph.D. in Medical Sciences”, Field of study “Pathology”, Option “Experimental Pathology”.

Note: All applicants, regardless of the option (Human Pathology or Experimental Pathology) and the course (Master or Doctorate), must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate Program in Pathology.
